By January 2018, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) hosted more than 540,000 refugees, and 4.5 million people were displaced inside the country. Despite difficult conditions in the DRC itself, refugees from neighbouring countries have been arriving in some areas. Since May 2017, more than 87,300 people from the Central African Republic have arrived in Nord-Ubangi and Bas-Uele provinces. The DRC is among the world’s poorest countries, measured by gross national income per capita. Insecurity in some parts of the country and few roads, makes it difficult to protect and assist refugees and displaced people. Through our 19 offices in the DRC, we provide protection and assistance for those forced to flee their homes, helping to find long-term responses and supporting them on the way to self-reliance. PLUS
